L’objectif de cette étude est de fournir une description détaillée du rôle des langues, en particulier des langues indigènes, dans le programme d’études secondaires au Bangladesh. Par cette recherche, je cherche à identifier le rôle des langues maternelles dans l’éducation. Le programme d’études du Bangladesh est conçu de manière centralisée et ne met pas l’accent sur les langues minoritaires. Bien que les langues tribales ne soient pas incluses à la fois dans le programme prévu et dans le programme opérationnel, cela affecte les pratiques d’enseignement en classe ainsi que la vie des élèves tribaux. La langue d’enseignement étant le bangla, les cultures, les identités et les expériences passées des élèves tribaux ne sont pas valorisées dans les activités quotidiennes d’apprentissage en classe. En m’appuyant sur une conception du programme d’études comme outil de contrôle social des connaissances, je montre comment le programme d’études secondaires en langues favorise l’inégalité sociale par la domination intellectuelle du bangla et de l’anglais sur les langues tribales moins prestigieuses, en n’incluant pas les langues, la culture et les valeurs indigènes.
