History, media and hegemony in recent Brazil (2003-2014)

'In discussing the transformations in the press, Matheus de Carvalho Leibão offers a timely reflection on the limitations/possibilities for building counter-hegemonic communication in Brazilian society since Lula’s first term in office (2003). The transformations in communication with the arrival of the PT to the federal government are problematised throughout the three chapters of the work, using the theoretical dimensions of hegemony and counter-hegemony proposed by Gramsci. In a detailed analysis of selected newspapers, the forms of financing, the audience and the relationship with the government were observed. The bibliography is up to date and appropriate for the study of the period and for reflections on communication and counter-hegemony. I highlight the quality of the text, the consistent conceptual approach and the breadth of the research.
