A hiperlexia é um perfil de leitura do neurodesenvolvimento marcado por competências de descodificação de palavras invulgarmente precoces e fortes que contrastam com deficiências na compreensão da leitura, na compreensão auditiva e na linguagem pragmática. Não é um diagnóstico autónomo no DSM-5-TR ou na CID-11 e está mais frequentemente associado à perturbação do espetro do autismo, embora possa também coocorrer com perturbações da linguagem ou da aprendizagem. Esta monografia oferece uma visão global da hiperlexia, desde o seu reconhecimento histórico até às teorias e classificações actuais. Faz uma revisão crítica de cinco teorias e propõe um quadro sintomático de cinco níveis que distingue caraterísticas primárias, correlacionadas, secundárias, artefactuais e idiopáticas. Com base em investigação empírica, incluindo um estudo psico-educacional de 2009 realizado em Singapura, ilustra os diversos perfis cognitivos e linguísticos dos indivíduos hiperléxicos e os desafios de diagnóstico colocados pelo seu desenvolvimento desigual. O trabalho também sintetiza os modelos tipológicos existentes e examina as suas implicações para a avaliação, o diagnóstico diferencial e a intervenção educativa, com o objetivo de melhorar a compreensão, a identificação precoce e o apoio direcionado.
