Os polímeros condutores (CPs) formam uma classe de materiais orgânicos cujas propriedades eletrônicas preenchem a lacuna entre os polímeros isolantes convencionais e os condutores inorgânicos, como metais ou óxidos metálicos. A sua descoberta desafiou a antiga suposição de que substâncias orgânicas conjugadasos materiais eram inerentemente isolantes, abrindo um novo campo que conectava a química dos polímeros, a física da matéria condensada, a eletroquímica e a ciência dos materiais.No nível molecular, os polímeros condutores possuem uma estrutura conjugada π - normalmente composta de ligações simples e duplas alternadas - que suporta a deslocalização de elétrons. Esta conjugação permite o transporte de carga tanto na dopagem química (oxidação ou redução) quanto na dopagem eletroquímica. Os portadores de carga móvel resultantes - polarons,bipolarons, sólitons ou estados deslocalizados - conferem aos polímeros condutores propriedades elétricas, eletroquímicas e ópticas únicas.
