Colombia y la economía mundial, 1830-1910, es un clásico en la historiografía económica colombiana. En su prólogo a la primera edición, Jaime Jaramillo Uribe resaltó la manera como el libro avanzó en el conocimiento de nuestra historia “gracias a un uso amplísimo de las fuentes, a su experto manejo del método comparativo y de los métodos estadísticos y a su equilibrado uso de la teoría económica y de los datos históricos”. A su vez, en el prólogo a esta edición, Miguel Urrutia Montoya lo caracteriza como “la investigación más importante de historia económica hecha en Colombia”. En el análisis detallado del comercio exterior de Colombia en el siglo XIX, el autor concluye que el país solo logró una débil inserción en la economía internacional como lo que denomina una “periferia secundaria”. La característica esencial fue que el país únicamente alcanzó éxitos cuando los precios internacionales eran atípicamente altos, pero que los éxitos temporales desaparecían una vez que los precios descendían, un fenómeno que el autor caracteriza como “producción-especulación”. Este patrón culminó en un verdadero colapso a fines del siglo XIX, hasta que el café abrió nuevas posibilidades de desenvolvimiento en los primeros años del siglo XX.
