'There is something out there,' a Cheyenne a troubled brave warns Walking Man as they pursue a small band of soldiers across the desolate prairie. The Cheyenne warrior is uncertain of the meaning until he is visited by a spirit that warns him of an ancient enemy of the tribe; a hideous beast from the past who feeds on blood-lust and fear. The mythical creature attacks the Cheyenne, nearly wiping them out, and Walking Man, frantic to save the lives of the remaining warriors, is forced to strike a bargain with the soldiers. Join forces, he tells the white men, and let us fight the beast together. The enemies become allies in a desperate fight to kill the creature, but the story is not over. A second spirit visits Walking Man with a message that both parties face a hidden danger. Now, in, in a battle that can have only one outcome, the hunters become the hunted in a last, violent encounter against a creature that will not die.
