La vegetación es la forma en que las especies vegetales utilizan el espacio disponible en un tiempo dado. El clima es uno de los factores determinantes de la distribución de la vegetación por cuanto influye sobre las especies y formas de vida vegetales que pueden habitar un lugar. Este libro ofrece una visión sinóptica de los bioclimas y de la vegetación de Chile continental a partir de la aplicación de una metodología, que consiste en combinar información bioclimática y vegetacional sobre la base del estudio de las fuentes documentales disponibles. Esta propuesta identifica cuatro macrobioclimas en Chile continental: Tropical, Mediterráneo, Templado y Antiboreal, dentro de los que se distribuyen 12 bioclimas. La clasificación de la vegetación se compone de 125 unidades básicas denominadas Pisos de Vegetación, que corresponden a complejos de comunidades vegetales bajo la influencia de condiciones climáticas específicas, que se agrupan en 19 Formaciones Vegetales. Finalmente se presenta un análisis del estado de conservación de la vegetación de Chile sobre la base de la proporción en que cada piso de vegetación ha sido reemplazado por actividades humanas y de su representación en las áreas protegidas del Estado. 10
