Basado en una extensa investigación de archivos en Perú, España e Italia,Preparando medicinas en Lima durante el temprano periodo colonial examinacómo se entrenaron los boticarios en la Ciudad de los Reyes y la formaen que ocuparon su lugar en la sociedad. En el libro, Newson argumentaque los boticarios tenían el potencial de ser innovadores en la ciencia,especialmente en el Nuevo Mundo donde encontraron nuevos entornosy diversas tradiciones curativas. Sin embargo, la autora muestra que a pesarde las tendencias experimentales entre algunos boticarios, generalmentese adhirieron a las prácticas humorales tradicionales y a la materia medicaimportada de España en lugar de adoptar plantas nativas o explotar los ricosrecursos minerales de la región. Esta adhesión no se debió a la regulaciónestatal, sino que reflejó el afianzamiento de las creencias humoralesen el pensamiento popular y su promoción por parte de la Iglesiay de la Inquisición. 10
