Książka ta jest wynikiem badań przeprowadzonych w ramach Miejskiej Polityki Sportu i Rekreacji miasta Recife w latach 2002-2008. Głównym celem badania było zbadanie sprzeczności i możliwości polityki sportu i rekreacji w zakresie przyczynienia się do emancypacyjnej edukacji młodzieży, mając na uwadze wzmocnienie klas ludowych w walce o nową hegemonię. Analizując relacje między młodzieżą, czasem wolnym i rekreacją w erze maszyn programowalnych pod hegemonią systemu kapitalistycznego, badanie podkreśla rolę młodzieży w walce o transformację porządku społecznego, wskazując na strategiczne znaczenie kulturowych przejawów czasu wolnego w procesie emancypacyjnej edukacji i broniąc ich miejsca w programach polityczno-społecznych demokratycznych rządów ludowych.
