El mundo estaba cambiando tras la independencia política de las últimas colonias españolas. Además, cada vez cobraba más peso la influencia del pensamiento positivista en la actividad intelectual de Latinoamérica. Asimismo, el pragmatismo de los Estados Unidos y la diplomacia internacional empezaban a prevalecer. La idea unitaria de un Occidente cristiano estaba en crisis.
