A diferencia de nuestra sociedad contemporánea, las sociedades premodernas se basaban en una diversidad de planos y fuentes normativas en constante disputa.Desde la Grecia clásica hasta la temprana modernidad los artículos de este libro recorren el problema de la ley haciendo eje en la dimensión plural y agónica de la misma La ley se presenta como trabajo que movilizaba a una pluralidad de actores e instituciones a lo largo de los muchos niveles que implicaba su puesta en práctica. Esta pluralidad de instancias participantes otorgaba a la ley su verdadera dimensión social, infundiéndole un carácter abierto y procesual, jamás confinado al hierro de la letra. El conflicto, en este marco, lejos de representar lo opuesto a la norma y a la ley resultaba un escenario que permitía definir nuevos grupos y nuevas alianzas. 10
