Moby Dick es una novela publicada en 1851 que narra las aventuras en un barco ballenero, Pequod, en su persecución a un gran cachalote blanco. Este barco es capitaneado por Ahab, el segundo al mando es Ismael y el arponero es Queequog. Esta novela es mundialmente famosa no tanto por su trama, sino porque podría caracterizarse de enciclopédica por la célebre inclusión de conocimiento enciclopédico que incluye sobre la caza de ballenas en el siglo XIX así como de la vida marinera de la época. Se compone por 80 epígrafes que están relacionados con el mar, las ballenas o el Levitán (la bestia marina del Antiguo Testamento). Esta obra se encuentra entre los clásicos más conocidos y su autor es de los mejores autores estadounidenses, a pesar de que no tuvo éxito comercial hasta el fallecimiento de su autor y entrado el siglo XX.
