Ambientada en la ciudad de Vetusta (en la realidad, Oviedo) La Regenta, publicada en 1884, es la gran novela de la literatura española del siglo XIX y una de las más importantes de la historia, según muchos críticos. Se trata de una obra naturalista que retrata con dureza el ambiente de una ciudad de provincias dominada por una clase alta ociosa y un clero que impone una moral hipócrita y asfixiante. Ana Ozores es la protagonista, una bella y joven muchacha que se casa con don Víctor Quintana, antiguo regente de Vetusta, mucho mayor que ella, egoísta, y que vive en cierto modo en un mundo que no tiene nada que ver con la realidad. Ana se siente agobiada en su matrimonio y, debido a su frustración, es atrapada por don Álvaro, el donjuán de la ciudad, y por su propio confesor, don Fermín de Pas, quien anhela convertirla en su esposa.
