Chironomiden, allgemein als Zuckmücken oder blinde Mücken bezeichnet, sind weit verbreitete und kosmopolitische Wasserinsekten . Sie sind schätzungsweise mindestens 200 Millionen Jahre alt und stammen aus der Trias (Ashe et al., 1987). Weltweit sind etwa 5.000 Arten beschrieben, aber Schätzungen zufolge gibt es bis zu 20.000 Arten (Ferrington et al., 2008). Chironomiden sind holometabole Insekten. Der durchschnittliche Lebenszyklus von Chironomiden beträgt vier Wochen. Ihr Lebenszyklus umfasst drei aquatische Entwicklungsstadien (Ei, Larve und Puppe) und ein terrestrisches Reproduktionsstadium (geflügelter Erwachsener).
