La Asociación de Naciones del Sudeste Asiático (ASEAN) y el Mercado Común del Sur (Mercosur), aunque con distancias geográficas considerables, que derivan en diferencias histórico-culturales, son procesos de integración con ciertas proximidades y rasgos comunes. Incluso, con orígenes, funcionamiento y resultados distintos, dan cuenta del incremento de su interdependencia económica en el plano comercial durante el siglo XXI. Mediante una investigación de enfoque empírico, apoyada en técnicas de relevamiento documental y de datos estadísticos, este libro describe y analiza la lógica institucional de las dos subregiones, el proceso de acercamiento diplomático entre ambas, el estado de formalización de las relaciones interregionales Mercosur-ASEAN y, mediante indicadores de posición y dinámica comercial, cuantifica los flujos de sus intercambios. Asimismo, determina hechos de dinámica relativa interregional —ventajas comparativas, grado de similitud o disparidad de sus ofertas exportadoras, magnitud de su complementariedad o rivalidad, naturaleza del comercio y potencialidades intraindustriales—, así como la intensidad de las relaciones comerciales durante el periodo 2001-2022. Lo anterior está acompañado de un análisis comparativo de la lógica institucional y el funcionamiento de ambos acuerdos en las negociaciones externas; finalmente, se concluye que existen razones para relanzar y profundizar el interregionalismo. Sin embargo, es importante mencionar que el Mercosur necesita realizar ajustes institucionales a fin de aprovechar las oportunidades que presenta. 10
