Negli ambienti aristocratici della Roma decadente, il protagonista Andrea Sperelli si muove alla ricerca del proprio appagamento edonistico, lungo un percorso segnato dal lusso e dalla malinconia. Per Sperelli le qualità del virtuoso valgono anche in amore, degenerando in una ambigua doppiezza: intreccia prima una relazione con Elena, la femme fatale, e subito dopo con Maria, simbolo di una purezza che viene violata. Il piacere offre un quadro profondo e poetico dell’insoddisfazione di un’élite che soffoca nel desiderio di trascendere attraverso l’arte e la sensualità. Non solo: dietro il protagonista emerge d’Annunzio stesso, che riversa invano sul personaggio-gentiluomo le sue ambizioni di dandy esemplare. La corsa al sublime diventa presto vuoto esistenziale.
