Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest Program Studiów Podyplomowych w zakresie Edukacji Uniwersytetu Federalnego w Mato Grosso (PPGE/UFMT). Utworzony w 1987 r. na mocy uchwały nr CD 008/87, jest to pierwszy program studiów podyplomowych o charakterze stricto sensu w tym stanie. W 2007 roku obchodził 20-lecie istnienia i była to odpowiednia okazja, aby wśród hołdów, jakie mu złożono, znalazł się dokument, który w skrócie opisywałby jego dotychczasową historię, perypetie, jakim był poddany, oraz perspektywy, jakie przed nim stoją. Postanowiono zatem przeprowadzić badania historyczne programu, starając się zrozumieć przebieg sporów między podmiotami walczącymi o zachowanie lub przekształcenie tej przestrzeni produkcji i reprodukcji wiedzy, a także główne strategie przyjęte w tym zakresie. Badania opierały się na koncepcji pola Pierre’a Bourdieu, mającej na celu zrozumienie relacji siłowych między podmiotami tworzącymi strukturę PPGE.
