Mediante la consulta de abundantes fuentes impresas y manuscritas, muchas de ellas inéditas, se reconstruyen minuciosamente seis casos trágicos de envenenamiento acontecidos entre la Edad Media y el siglo XX que nos ayudan a entender los cambios en los aspectos sociales, culturales, políticos, económicos y científicos del universo de los venenos. Esta combinación de la escala microhistórica con la larga duración y el estudio comparado permite cuestionar los tópicos más comunes en la actualidad acerca de los venenos, tales como el arquetipo de las mujeres envenenadoras o el valor atribuido a las pruebas científicas y médicas en los juicios. Estos casos muestran el papel decisivo de la pluralidad de formas de abordar los envenenamientos, tanto por las diversas concepciones acerca de las sustancias como por la diversidad de expertos involucrados en su investigación y el conjunto heterogéneo de métodos de detección disponibles en cada momento, cada uno de ellos con diferente poder probatorio en los contextos legales correspondientes. De este modo, a través de los productos tóxicos y de sus violencias asociadas, se exploran las intrincadas relaciones entre ciencia, medicina y justicia.
