A finales del siglo XIX, un pueblo del salvaje Oeste ubicado en la árida planicie de Utah sufre el infortunio de quedarse sin agua cuando, de la noche a la mañana, su río que descendía de las Abajo Mountains, se ha secado por completo. Con la misteriosa desaparición del cauce, tiene lugar la aparición de un misterioso personaje que se presenta en el pueblo prometiendo a los habitantes hacer que su río vuelva a rugir a cambio de una generosa retribución. A raíz de semejante situación sin precedentes, los pocos lugartenientes que han decidido permanecer en la localidad acceden a colaborar con el forastero. De ese modo, se verán obligados a llevar a cabo un acto de fe ante la desesperación y la escasez de agua, mientras el mundo a su alrededor parece sumirse en el caos absoluto.
