''Charlemont or The Pride of the Village: A Tale of Kentucky'' is a novel written by William Gilmore Simms. The story is set in the early 19th century in a small village in Kentucky. The protagonist, Edward Colleton, is a young man who is the son of a wealthy planter. He is handsome, intelligent, and well-educated, but also arrogant and proud. Edward falls in love with a beautiful young woman named Lucy Templeton, who is the daughter of a poor farmer. Despite the social differences between them, the two become engaged. However, Edward’s pride and arrogance lead him to make a series of poor decisions that ultimately lead to his downfall. He becomes involved in a feud with a neighboring family, which results in violence and tragedy. Meanwhile, Lucy’s father dies, leaving her and her family destitute. Edward’s father refuses to allow him to marry Lucy, and Edward is forced to choose between his pride and his love for her.The novel explores themes of pride, class, and social status in early 19th century America. It also provides a vivid portrayal of life in a small Kentucky village at the time. Simms is known for his detailed descriptions of the natural landscape and his use of dialect and local color in his writing. ''Charlemont or The Pride of the Village'' is considered one of his most important works and a classic of Southern literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
