Esta es la historia de Manuela, una mujer a la que la realidad se le viene encima en Madrid el 18 de julio de 1936. Sin embargo, este relato comienza unos años atrás, con una campesina que tiene la suerte de estudiar, conocer y aprender más allá de los crucifijos de la escuela de su Torrecampo natal y así convertirse en enfermera y comadrona. El azaroso destino tiene a bien rodearla de intelectuales con quienes descubre su parte más política y da rienda suelta a todo lo que hasta entonces había catalogado como prohibido: la rebeldía, el amor y el sexo. Tras el estallido de la guerra vuelve al Valle de los Pedroches a trabajar atendiendo partos de casa en casa. Allí, su peculiar forma de cuidar a las mujeres despertará el recelo de alguno de sus vecinos. Pronto surgirán enemigos y amenazas que le obligarán a enrolarse en una aventura impensable para una mujer de los años treinta. Esta es también la historia de todas las mujeres con las que Manuela se cruzó en su camino, las que le ayudaron a llevar a cabo la difícil y trascendental misión en la que se vio envuelta cuando intentaba salvar a su familia del horror que vivió España en aquellos años. Es la historia que nunca nos contaron, la que se escribe en los márgenes.
